Computed Tomography Coronary Angiography (CTCA)
What is Computed Tomography Coronary Angiography (CTCA)?
Computed Tomography (CT) Coronary Angiography is the capturing of coronary arteries images by using a CT Scanner.
Who need a CT Coronary Angiography?
A person who need to find out whether his coronary arteries are narrowed, which could be symptomatic or asymptomatic.
What happens during a CT Coronary Angiography?
You will lie on the CT Scanner bed, the bed slides in and out of the scanner's big circular hole while images of your heart are taken
While you are on the bed, you will be given a rapid intra-venous injection of iodine contrast agent through the cannula, by a pressure injector.
You will be asked to hold your breath for approximately 10-12 seconds each time a scan is taken, you will hear the CT machine's tube rotation around you to capture images.
Are there any after effects of CTCA?
Allergy to the contrast agent might occur. This can range from sneezing, itchiness, rash and hives to breathing difficulties, blood pressure drop and soft tissue swelling in the face and throat.
What is the radiation fose for the procedure?
Estimated effective dose ranged from 7 to 10 milli Sievert (mSv). There is no maximum radiation dose set for the patient, as long as the benefit of diagnosis outweighs the radiation detrimental effect.
What are the benefits of a CTCA?
CTCA is a simple and non-invasive imaging of coronary arteries compared to Invasive Coronary Angiography done in Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab).
CTCA is able to show the extent and location of atherosclerosis at the external wall of coronary arteries.
Who does the CTCA?
A team of medical staff including specialist doctors (radiologists, cardiologists), radiographers and nurses are usually involved. The images are interpreted by radiologist or cardiologist, and a written report is provided to your referring doctor.
