Columbia Asia Magical 5k Diabetes Awareness Run lends an air of enchantment in Taman Botani, Shah Alam

Countless companies from the private sector organize charity runs to coincide with World Diabetes Awareness Day that falls annually on 18th of November. To stand out, one has got to be truly different. Columbia Asia decided to make ours memorable by organising a 5km fairyland-themed Columbia Asia Magical 5K Diabetes Awareness Run at Taman Botani Negara, Shah Alam last Sunday.

Along the 5km route were themed pit-stops based on famous wonderland scenarios. Each had a magical theme with insta-worthy backdrops. The Mushroom Forest featured oversized props, making runners feel miniature as if lost in a giant forest. Next came the Fro-Zone, where things cooled down with man-made snow and mist showers. Cosplayers dressed as snowflakes and ice princesses amused the runners who stopped to take pictures. The next pit-stop was Under the Sea that featured a seaweed tunnel and a seashell corner. Cosplayers dressed as jellyfish and mermaids were a hit with the children.

Some 2,000 came and supported the event. They went home enchanted and mesmerised by the magical characters that filled their Sunday morning with their family and friends. In addition, they warmly gave support to help raise RM20,000 for the underprivileged diabetic children supported by Diabetes Malaysia.

This CSR effort by Columbia Asia supports diabetic children under the auspice of Diabetes Malaysia. Diabetes is a life-long disease so managing it is essential. Although patients get insulin at no charge from government hospitals, they still need to buy their own monitoring equipment that consist of glucometers, strips, needles and lancets. They need these items on a daily basis to check their blood glucose level. For underprivileged families, this could be a struggle.

Columbia Asia Magical 5K Diabetes Awareness Run raised RM20,000 for the diabetic children under Diabetes Malaysia. This is the sixth year that Columbia Asia has held a Diabetes Awareness event in aid of the NGO. Assistant General Secretary of Diabetes Malaysia, K.S. Maniam, received a mock cheque from Columbia Asia – South East Asia CEO, Kelvin Tan. Tan flagged off the runners along with Regional General Manager of Columbia Asia (Region II) Tom Lim and Regional General Manager of Columbia Asia (Region I) Engku Marina Engku Hatim.
