What are the types of Down syndrome and the percentage that they occur?<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-237bcae elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"237bcae\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There are three types of Down syndrome:<\/p><ul><li class=\"syndrome-margin\"><b>Trisomy 21<\/b><\/li><\/ul><p>Trisomy 21 means there\u2019s an extra copy of chromosome 21 in every cell. This is the most common form of Down syndrome (95%).<\/p><ul><li class=\"syndrome-margin\"><b>Mosaicism<\/b><\/li><\/ul><p>Mosaicism occurs when a child is born with an extra chromosome in some but not all of their cells. People with mosaic Down syndrome tend to have fewer symptoms than those with trisomy (21.2%).<\/p><ul><li class=\"syndrome-margin\"><b>Translocation<\/b><\/li><\/ul><p>In this type of Down syndrome, children have only an extra part of chromosome 21. There are 46 total chromosomes. How is prenatal screening or diagnosis done, and when should a pregnant mother do so?<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0aa2663 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0aa2663\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Screening tests have no risks of miscarriage, but can\u2019t determine with certainty whether a foetus is affected.\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>There are 3 types of screening tests for Down syndrome: the combined first trimester screening, the non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), and the second trimester maternal serum screening.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7fa40bd elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"7fa40bd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c50cd6f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c50cd6f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" id=\"subtopic04\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Combined First Trimester Screening<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-43d3a97 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"43d3a97\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The combined first trimester screening test is done between 9 weeks and 13 weeks (plus 6 days) into the pregnancy to calculate the chance of a number of abnormalities, including Down syndrome. It is safe for both mother and baby.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>A computer is used to combine results from 2 tests: A blood test, done between 9 and 12 weeks into the pregnancy, looks for hormonal changes that can suggest there is a problem with the baby\u2019s chromosomes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>An ultrasound scan, done at 12 to 13 weeks into the pregnancy, measures the thickness of fluid behind the baby\u2019s neck, called the nuchal translucency. This is often larger in babies with Down syndrome. These results, combined with the mother\u2019s age, show the chance of Down syndrome.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d12c52e elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"d12c52e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5ab36fd elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5ab36fd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" id=\"subtopic05\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Non-invasive Prenatal Test<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e1ec497 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e1ec497\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It involves a simple blood test that analyses DNA from the baby that has passed into the mother\u2019s bloodstream. The test is done after 10 weeks and is more than 99% accurate for Down syndrome.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-137e1c7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"137e1c7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-52023bf elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"52023bf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" id=\"subtopic06\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Second Trimester Screening<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bac85a1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bac85a1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Sometimes called a maternal serum screen (MSS) or \u2018triple test\u2019, it is done between 14 and 18 weeks into the pregnancy. It is usually offered to women who missed the combined first trimester screening test. These are tested for missing, extra or abnormal chromosomes. The procedure is done between 11 and 14 weeks of pregnancy. It is not painful and takes about 20 minutes. The risk of miscarriage is less than 1 in 100.<\/p><ul><li class=\"syndrome-margin\"><b>Amniocentesis<\/b><\/li><\/ul><p>A needle, guided by ultrasound, is inserted into the mother\u2019s abdomen, to take a sample of amniotic fluid. This is tested for missing, extra or abnormal chromosomes. This procedure is done between 15 and 18 weeks of pregnancy. It is not painful and takes about 20 minutes. The risk of miscarriage is also less than 1 in 100.<\/p><ul><li class=\"syndrome-margin\"><b>Percutaneous umbilical blood sampling (PUBS, or cordocentesis)<\/b><\/li><\/ul><p>Your doctor will take blood from the umbilical cord and examine it for chromosomal defects. It\u2019s done after the 18th week of pregnancy. If a red flag is encountered, then further investigation will be carry out.<\/p><p>A Down syndrome child requires life-long monitoring.
