To our surprise, the topic generated a rather heated debate, especially on the \u201ccorrect\u201d dosage of vitamin C. Although the tolerable upper intake level for vitamin C is said to be 2,000mg\u00a0Recommended Nutrients Intake, she says adults should not ingest more than\u00a0<strong>1,000mg<\/strong>\u00a0to avoid health risks. \u00a0\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Like Kong, Yeoh Ee Ling, education manager of Fitness Innovations, says that 1,000mg of vitamin C supplementation is agreeable to the body. \u00a0\u00a0<br \/><br \/><strong>Bottom line:\u00a0<\/strong>Consumption of 1,000mg of vitamin C supplementation is safe. \u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e1dc5c8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"e1dc5c8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c4f8035 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c4f8035\" data-element_type=\"widget\" id=\"subtopic02\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How about vitamin C from food?<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ccffffd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ccffffd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Although the experts differ on the exact amount, it falls in the range of\u00a0<strong>70mg to 100mg<\/strong>. \u201cRecommended dietary allowance is 90mg for males and 75mg for females,\u201d Yeoh says. However, Kong says 70mg of vitamin C is sufficient for adults up to age 90. As for Datuk Dr. Selvalingam Sothilingam, consultant urologist from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.columbiaasia.com\/malaysia\/hospitals\/cheras\/overview\">Columbia Asia Hospital &#8211; Cheras<\/a>, he suggests adults consume between 90g and 100mg of vitamin C from food. \u00a0\u00a0<br \/><br \/>All three experts agree that vitamin C supplementation is unnecessary if you have a balanced diet. Dr. Sothilingam, for one, doesn\u2019t believe in it. \u201cThe vitamin C that you get from food is enough for your body. You don\u2019t need high doses to boost your immune system and antioxidant levels,\u201d he says. To ensure you get enough, you just need to know which foods contain high levels of vitamin C, he adds. Citrus fruit, broccoli, sweet potatoes and cauliflower, for example, are rich in the micronutrient. \u00a0\u00a0<br \/><br \/><strong>Bottom line:<\/strong>\u00a0Vitamin C supplementation is not necessary if you have a balanced diet. \u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0721a61 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"0721a61\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d8e82c2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d8e82c2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" id=\"subtopic03\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Who really needs vitamin C?<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e4da147 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e4da147\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Nevertheless, some are advised to boost their intake. \u201cIf you don\u2019t eat healthfully, that\u2019s when vitamin C supplementation can benefit you,\u201d Dr. Sothilingam says. \u00a0\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Vitamin C can\u2019t boost your athletic performance though, but it is essential if you have a high-intensity training regime, Yeoh says. Those in a weight-sensitive category or on a low-calorie diet might also need supplementation, as their vitamin C consumption from food would be lower. \u00a0\u00a0<br \/><br \/><strong>Bottom line:<\/strong>\u00a0Vitamin C supplementation is recommended for those who are not getting enough of the micronutrient from food. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-826f997 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"826f997\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9a171ff elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9a171ff\" data-element_type=\"widget\" id=\"subtopic04\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Will I get kidney stones?<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0d01102 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0d01102\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>No and yes. Consuming excessive amounts of vitamin C doesn\u2019t always cause\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.columbiaasia.com\/malaysia\/health-articles\/ask-doctor-kidney-diseases\">kidney stones<\/a>, but it does\u00a0<strong>increase their likelihood<\/strong>, Dr. Sothilingam says. However, \u201ctypically, stone formation is\u00a0<strong>multifactorial<\/strong>,\u201d meaning it is determined by a combination of factors such as your genes, urinary system and diet, he adds. \u00a0\u00a0<br \/><br \/>If you\u2019re worried about stones in your kidneys, Dr. Sothilingam advises\u00a0<strong>reducing your intake of sodium and purine<\/strong>, which are found in food such as red meat, nuts and offal. Bodybuilders should also be cautious when taking protein supplements, as they are known to increase the risk of kidney stones. \u00a0\u00a0<br \/><br \/><strong>Bottom line:<\/strong>\u00a0There is no definitive evidence that consuming excessive amounts of vitamin C will cause kidney stones. However, some studies have found that consuming more than 1,000mg of vitamin C over a period of time will increase the risk. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5cf8cb9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"5cf8cb9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2224eae elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2224eae\" data-element_type=\"widget\" id=\"subtopic05\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The misconceptions<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3959d08 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3959d08\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Due to the successful marketing of vitamin C supplements, some Malaysians think that they need to do more to ensure they take enough of the micronutrient \u2013 going so far as to get regular vitamin C shots from clinics, Dr. Sothilingam says. \u201cThey claim it gives them a feel-good factor, but a lot of that might be due to a\u00a0<strong>placebo effect<\/strong>.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Meanwhile, Yeoh wants to debunk a common belief. \u201cMost people think that vitamin C \u2018cures\u2019 colds.\u201d In truth, it only serves as a\u00a0<strong>preventive<\/strong>\u00a0measure, she explains. \u00a0\u00a0<br \/><br \/><strong>Bottom line:<\/strong>\u00a0Vitamin C is not a magic pill.
