can affect people of all ages.<\/p><ul><li>While cases in Malaysia are not widely documented, Dr. Khoo notes that GBS is\u00a0<strong>more common in adults and in males<\/strong>, with an incidence rate of 1 to 2 cases per 100,000 people per year worldwide.<\/li><li>Contrary to some personal accounts, there is no evidence that GBS is becoming more prevalent among younger Malaysians.<\/li><li>In fact, the incidence of GBS\u00a0<strong>increases with age<\/strong>, particularly after 50.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element cause(s) of GBS.<\/p><p>Common possible triggers include:<\/p><ul><li>Respiratory infections<\/li><li>Stomach flu<\/li><li>Viral infections<\/li><li><em>Campylobacter jejuni<\/em>, a bacteria that typically causes diarrhea<\/li><li>In rare cases, even certain vaccines have been linked to GBS, though the risk is extremely low<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div botulism, myasthenia gravis to name a few.<\/p><p>Hence, making an accurate diagnosis is critical.<\/p><p>Doctors typically perform the following:<\/p><ul><li>Physical examination to check for muscle weakness and reflex loss.<\/li><li>Nerve conduction studies (NCS) to assess nerve function.<\/li><li>Lumbar puncture or spinal tap to examine cerebrospinal fluid for elevated protein levels.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cce6c4f elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"cce6c4f\" cure<\/strong>\u00a0for GBS, Dr Khoo tells us that treatment can speed up recovery and reduce complications.<\/p><p>In Malaysia, two key treatments are available.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><h4><strong>Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIg)<\/strong><\/h4><ul><li>This is a therapy that helps block harmful immune responses.<\/li><li>Antibodies from donors are administered through a drip into the blood stream of the person with GBS.<\/li><li>This is a proven effective treatment, although the effectiveness can vary from one individual with GBS to another.<\/li><\/ul><h4><strong>Plasmapheresis<\/strong><\/h4><ul><li>Blood is first extracted from the person with GBS.<\/li><li>The blood is then broken down in a special device, which separates the component of the blood that contains antibodies called the plasma from the rest of the blood.<\/li><li>Next, the antibodies that attack the nerves are filtered out of the plasma.<\/li><li>The \u2018purified\u2019 plasma is then administered back into the person with GBS.<\/li><li>Some studies suggest that plasmapheresis works best when it is initiated early, typically within 7 days after the symptoms appear. However, this treatment can still be beneficial when initiated up to 4 weeks after the symptoms appear.<\/li><\/ul><p>\u201cBoth treatments are available in major public and private hospitals, but access may be limited to tertiary healthcare centers,\u201d Dr Khoo adds.<\/p><p>These treatments are conducted by a\u00a0<strong>neurologist<\/strong>\u00a0or a physician trained in neurology.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-032a651 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"032a651\" news is that most people with GBS can recover.<\/p><p>\u201cPatients typically\u00a0<strong>start improving within 2 to 3 weeks<\/strong>\u00a0after treatment,\u201d says Dr. Khoo.<\/p><p>He adds: \u201cHowever,\u00a0<strong>recovery can take months or even years<\/strong>, and some patients may experience\u00a0<strong>lasting weakness or fatigue.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p><p>Factors that can affect recovery include:<\/p><ul><li>The patient is of an older age<\/li><li>The symptoms are very severe, requiring admission of the patient into the intensive care unit (ICU)<\/li><li>Past cases of diarrhoea<\/li><li>The need for mechanical ventilation<\/li><li>Weakness in the upper limbs<\/li><\/ul><p>For those left with residual weakness, rehabilitation (including physical, occupational, and speech therapy) is crucial for them to improve their quality of life.<\/p><p>A small percentage of people with GBS that have successfully undergone treatment may experience a relapse in the future.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c6fb984 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"c6fb984\"
