MBPJ Honours Newborn at Columbia Asia Hospital Petaling Jaya on Petaling Jaya City's 20th Anniversary
PETALING JAYA, June 22, 2026 – A baby was born at Columbia Asia Hospital Petaling Jaya on June 20, the same day when Petaling Jaya was proclaimed city status 20 years ago. In celebration of its city status anniversary, the newborn received special recognition from the Petaling Jaya City Council (Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya/MBPJ) through its Bayi Bandar Raya programme.
The baby boy, delivered at 11:02 a.m. on June 22, weighed 2.46kg at birth. He is the child of Marymerina Anat Anushan and A.Anushan, a couple from Sri Lanka.
As part of the programme, MBPJ presented a gift hamper containing essential baby items and a lifetime complimentary membership to the MBPJ Community Library.
Petaling Jaya Mayor Dato’ Mohamad Zahri Samingon said the initiative not only celebrates new births but also reflects MBPJ’s commitment to strengthening ties with the local community.
“Every birth symbolises hope and the future. Through this programme, MBPJ wishes to share in the family’s joy while nurturing a sense of pride and affection for Petaling Jaya among the younger generation,” he said.
Petaling Jaya was officially granted city status on 20 June 2006. Today, the city covers an administrative area of 97.2 square kilometres and serves a population of 829,865 residents, with 292,680 property holdings.
During his visit to Columbia Asia Hospital Petaling Jaya, Dato’ Zahri personally presented commemorative gifts to the family.
The gifting session was attended by Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist Dr. Shrilekha Suriya Narayanan and Consultant Paediatrician Dr. Jayagauri Balakrishnan, who oversaw the safe birth of the baby, together with Mr Ng Wai Kit, CEO of Columbia Asia Hospital Petaling Jaya which is a member of Asia OneHealthcare’s regional network of hospitals in Southeast Asia.
