CHERAS, February 2026 – Columbia Asia Hospital Cheras recently managed a critical kidney emergency involving a patient who presented with severe abdominal pain. Following detailed clinical evaluation and diagnostic work-up, the patient was found to have right renal artery thrombosis (a blood clot that blocks the artery supplying blood to the right kidney), complicated by renal infarction (injury or death of kidney tissue due to reduced or blocked blood supply), with evidence of impaired renal function.
This case was successfully managed through coordinated multidisciplinary collaboration, led by:
A renal angiogram (a special imaging test using contrast dye to visualise blood flow in the kidney arteries) was performed to confirm the diagnosis and guide procedural planning. Hence, in view of the patient’s symptoms, clinical urgency, and after obtaining informed consent, our team proceeded with a renal artery thrombectomy (a minimally invasive procedure to remove the clot from the kidney artery and restore blood flow) — an endovascular intervention aimed at removing the clot and re-establishing blood flow to the affected kidney.
The procedure was completed in approximately 2.5 hours, followed by post-procedure close monitoring in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Positive clinical outcomes were observed after the procedure, including marked relief of abdominal pain, alongside early improvement in renal function.
This case reflects our commitment in delivering timely, advanced multidisciplinary care when minutes matter — because at Columbia Asia Hospital Cheras, we are Right Here For You.
