These rheumatic diseases can be separated into two categories:
- Musculoskeletal diseases – affect the joints, muscles and bones causing pain, swelling and the loss of motion in the joint
- Systemic autoimmune conditions – cause inflammation in areas that are not needed, resulting in damage to the body’s system such as the eyes, skin, nervous system and internal organs
