Columbia Asia Strengthens Northern Footprint With New Batu Kawan Hospital

BATU KAWAN, 19 May 2026 – Columbia Asia, a member of Asia OneHealthcare, held the official launch ceremony of Columbia Asia Hospital Batu Kawan. Operational since July 2025, the hospital is rapidly establishing itself as the primary private healthcare provider serving communities in Batu Kawan and the broader Penang mainland area. Strategically located in Bandar Cassia, the hospital supports Batu Kawan’s rapidly growing residential and industrial communities.

As the first private hospital within a 10-kilometre radius of Batu Kawan, the hospital opening reflects the growing need for healthcare infrastructure to keep pace with the area’s rapid residential, commercial, and industrial development. The hospital addresses a longstanding gap in private healthcare access for residents and workers across Batu Kawan and the surrounding mainland communities.

Official Launch Marks New Healthcare Milestone for Batu Kawan

The launch was officiated by the Yang Amat Berhormat Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang. It brought together state leaders, healthcare stakeholders, and community partners to mark the hospital’s official opening before proceeding on a guided tour across key departments and facilities. During the visit, guests engaged with consultants and healthcare personnel to gain a closer understanding of the hospital’s services and role in supporting the area’s growing healthcare needs.

Also present at the event were Yang Berhormat Tuan Daniel Gooi Zi Sen, EXCO for Health, Youth and Sports, Yang Berhormat Tuan Goh Choon Aik EXCO Trade and Community Unity cum Assemblyman for Bukit Tambun, Yang Berbahagia Dato’ Hj Baderul Amin Abdul Hamid, Datuk Bandar Majlis Bandaraya Seberang Perai, Yang Berusaha Encik Abdul Latiff bin Abd Aziz, Chief Executive Officer of Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and Dr Mary Ann Harris, Penang Centre of Medical Tourism Executive Director.

“Batu Kawan continues to strengthen its role as a major residential, commercial, and industrial hub on the mainland. As these communities continue to grow, access to dependable healthcare closer to home becomes increasingly important in supporting the well-being of residents, families, and the workforce in the area,” said YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang.

Strengthening Healthcare Access on Penang Mainland

Although its official launch was held today, the hospital has already been operational since July last year and is steadily establishing its presence within the community. It has also successfully onboarded major insurers and third-party administrators (TPAs), enabling cashless admission and treatment services that make quality healthcare more accessible and convenient for insured individuals in the area and its surroundings.

Beyond clinical services, the hospital has also been engaging local communities through health talks, workplace wellness initiatives, and emergency response and first aid awareness programmes conducted in collaboration with companies and factories around Batu Kawan. These efforts reflect its broader commitment to supporting preventive healthcare awareness and workplace preparedness across the township.

For many mainland residents, seeking specialist and emergency care has often required travelling beyond the immediate township. Columbia Asia Hospital Batu Kawan was established to help address these healthcare access gaps by bringing private healthcare services closer to surrounding communities and industrial areas such as Bukit Mertajam, Juru, Nibong Tebal, Parit Buntar, Seberang Perai, Simpang Ampat and Kulim, as well as Bayan Lepas that is connected from the island via the Second Penang Bridge.

The six-storey hospital can accommodate 145 beds and 31 specialist clinics. Currently, it is licensed with 49 beds and 21 specialist clinics. Its facilities include Accident and Emergency services, operating theatres, a Cardiac Catheterisation Lab, health screening services, and advanced radiology capabilities to support a broader range of healthcare needs across Penang mainland communities.

Emergency Care Closer to Evolving Mainland Corridor

A key highlight of the hospital is its Emergency Department, which provides residents and the surrounding workforce with access to urgent medical attention closer to where they live and work. As Batu Kawan continues to expand, the presence of dependable emergency healthcare services within the community becomes increasingly important, particularly during situations where immediate medical attention can make a critical difference.

“Many families on the mainland have traditionally travelled further for specialist and emergency treatment. With the opening of Columbia Asia Hospital Batu Kawan, our focus is to provide dependable and comprehensive healthcare closer to home, while supporting the growing communities and workforce that continue to establish deeper roots in this area,” said Encik Mohd Shafee Awang, Columbia Asia Hospital Batu Kawan Chief Executive Officer.

Reflecting on 30 Years of Community Healthcare

This year also marks 30 years of Columbia Asia serving communities across Malaysia and the region, reflecting the group’s continued evolution alongside changing healthcare needs and growing communities.

“As we mark 30 years of serving communities across Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam, the opening of Columbia Asia Hospital Batu Kawan reflects our continued commitment to strengthening healthcare access in communities that are continuing to grow and evolve. For us, healthcare is not only about building hospitals, but about ensuring care remains dependable, accessible, and closely connected to the people we serve,” said Dr Chan Boon Kheng, Managing Director and Group Chief Executive Officer of Asia OneHealthcare.

With the opening of this new hospital, Columbia Asia continues to strengthen healthcare access across Penang mainland while supporting the region’s long-term residential and economic growth.

Columbia Asia Hospital Batu Kawan is located at PMT 856, Jalan Cassia Barat 3/1, Bandar Cassia, 14110 Bandar Cassia, Pulau Pinang.
